SVGOMG SVGO plugins

Prefer viewBox to width/height (removeDimensions)

Removes width/height when viewBox is present so CSS controls sizing.

What Prefer viewBox to width/height does in SVGO

SVGO applies removeDimensions as part of its plugin pipeline. In SVGOMG the toggle is labeled Prefer viewBox to width/height (off by default). Optimization runs entirely in your browser — files are not uploaded to a server.

Use the SVGOMG optimizer with Show original to compare before and after. If output looks wrong, disable this plugin first, then re-enable related transforms one at a time.

When to enable

Responsive icons and illustrations scaled with CSS.

When to disable

Assets that need explicit pixel dimensions without CSS.

Watch out for

Pair with a valid viewBox; otherwise intrinsic size may collapse.

Try it in SVGOMG

  1. Open svgomg.net and load your SVG (file, paste, or demo).
  2. Find Prefer viewBox to width/height in the Features panel (removeDimensions).
  3. Toggle the plugin and compare the preview; download when satisfied.
